It rained during most of our drive from Pittsburgh to Ann Arbor. Our main purpose in visiting Ann Arbor was to go to Zingerman's. Those food obsessed people like myself know Zingerman's as the ultimate purveyor of gourmet food products and I was not going to be in this part of the country without going there. The business started off as a deli and is still very much one. There was a line out the door waiting to order sandwiches but it moved very swiftly and the staff people are so nice you never felt hurried. After eating our sandwiches we checked out some of the products for sale and sampled some olive oils. We then headed to another part of town where many of the things are made such as some of the cheeses, breads, cookies, cakes, gelato and on and on. They also have retail operations there and we sampled many delicious items. This evening we ate at Zingerman's Roadhouse which is the company's stand-alone restaurant. We got to meet one of the main partners in the business and he gave us free t-shirts when I told him we'd visited all his operations in one day. We also plugged our friends' Robbins Family Farm Olive Oil. He said he had a box and was anxious to try it.
Between our eating endeavors we did walk around downtown Ann Arbor and drove around the University of Michigan campus. The downtown looks very "college townish" and reminds me of dear old SLO except with about 3 times as many students.
We're hoping the rain will subside before we head to the other side of Michigan tomorrow.
I'll also be posting more pictures.
